Getting a Marketing Plan

June 30th, 2010

Most established writers have a strategy for writing. They may create a character web or some other type of outline that helps them to understand their work and to get it done well. What you don’t know is that most marketing experts also have a strategy. They never try to market a book until they know what they want to do and are ready to do it. This strategy helps to keep them organized and it helps to make sure that they do everything that they need to do in order to sell the book.

Most ebook writers don’t have a marketing guru behind them, so they need to learn how to market their ebook themselves. This means that you should definitely make yourself a marketing strategy. Your marketing strategy should be something that you can realistically follow, as well as something that hits all of the different levels of marketing that you need to do in order to have the best hope of selling many copies of your work. So how should you start your marketing strategy? First you should make sure that you know all of the different ways that you can market a book. You can, for instance, market your ebook through your website, through social networks (like Facebook and Twitter) and even though your regular, printed contacts.

Once you’ve got all of your marketing ideas written down, start organizing them in a way that makes sense to you. Most start by doing what is the most easy for them to do, but some say that doing the most difficult things first make sense, as after you figure out how to do the strategy, you can then spend your time doing the easier things. A marketing strategy is a great way to help you to sell your ebook – make sure that you know what plans you have and how you’re going to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself.

Writing During the Summer Months

June 28th, 2010

The summer months are a great time of year. It’s when you can get out and can enjoy the warm weather. You can grow things in the garden and you can enjoy many recreational activities that you can’t enjoy when the winter months are here. That also makes it much more difficult to find the time to write. When the winter months are here, finding the time to write is easy, especially if you live in the northern areas, as it’s never a fun thing to want to go outside during the yucky winter months. When summer comes, however, it is extremely difficult to find the desire to stay inside and write when the summer sun is shining.

When the summer months come, it’s time to give yourself a new strategy for writing, especially if you’ve already got a project that you’re working on. The first thing that you should do is to set aside specific times or days for you to write. For instance, if you have Wednesday evenings free, make sure that you sit down at the computer on Wednesday evenings to write for a few hours. You can also set a specific amount of pages that you must get done before you stop.

This doesn’t mean that you should spend all of your time indoors during the summer months. Part of the reason why the successful writers are so successful is because they write about life, and you can’t write about something when you don’t experience it, so make sure that you also plan some time to spend out of doors. You will soon find, if you stick to a schedule, that you have enough time to write and enough time to enjoy the warm summer months while they’re here.

Connecting Locally

June 25th, 2010

One of the biggest mistakes that many new authors make is in assuming that they should only advertise online. They write an ebook and then they try to sell it online. Getting established online is extremely important, and that’s something that we’ll go into in depth. But you should never forget about the local people. They are the ones who will be proud of your accomplishment and who will also help you to become the person that you want to be.

Once you’ve written your ebook, and you’ve started promoting it globally, start promoting it locally as well. There are many ways that you can promote your ebook locally, and even plenty of ways that you can do it without much, or any, money. One thing that you can do is to put the information about your book up on your local community bulletin boards. These bulletin boards are the ideal place to put up your information and will help people to see exactly what you’re doing. Make sure that you include a link to your website so that they can see even more about what you’re all about.

You can also connect with the local media. Talk with the newspaper reporters in your area and let them know about what you’re doing. If you live in a small area, you may be one of the first people to write and sell an ebook, which makes you newsworthy. You could also connect with your local radio stations, who may be willing to work with you to do a giveaway. If you’re interested in getting your ebook sold, and in getting your name out there, make sure that you think not only globally, but locally as well.

The Popularity of Epublishing

June 21st, 2010

Since the introduction of the iPad, other companies have been rushing to get out their products. They have been attempting to create new items that not only are able to make phone calls (which the iPad can not do), but that have much more internet access and abilities. Now it’s even possible to watch a movie on many of the different phones that are out there. Because of this it is becoming even more important to make sure that you know about epublishing.

Epublishing used to be something that only a very few people did. You could find plenty of fan websites that had fanfiction that you could enjoy online, and this was one o the first versions of epublishing. Now, however, it’s possible to find entire books, even some of the newest releases. Look at the bookstore and you’ll find some new books by your favorite authors. Look online and you’ll be able to find the same books, in e-format, and often for a much lower price, especially if you purchase a plan that allows you to download a specific amount of books within a specific time frame, much like people download music.

The main goal of any aspiring writer used to be to get published by a reputable publishing house. This could be very difficult, as publishing houses were very specific about who or what they wanted. The world of epublishing, however, has opened up the realm of possibilities for writers, and has made it easier now than ever before for someone to be able to publish their work. And now epublishing is not only easy, it’s reputable as well. If you’ve been wanting to publish your work, look to epublishing. It can help you to get your work published and to achieve your dreams.

Writing for Teens and Pre-Teens

June 18th, 2010

The other day we talked about writing books for children. Now we’re going to get into a whole different world – writing books for teenagers and pre-teens. Teenagers and pre-teens are a whole different type of crew when you talk about writing. They are too old for books that were created for youngsters, and too young for books that are created for adults. They need to have stories that intrigue and entice them, but that is much harder than it sounds, especially when you’re dealing with teenage boys.

So how do you write a story that is engaging to teenagers? First you have to figure out who your target audience is. Teenage boys, for example, are into entirely different things then teenage girls. There are some books that appeal to both sexes, but it can be extremely difficult to write a book that is enjoyed by both. Once you’ve figured out who your target audience is, start thinking about what type of story you’d like to write. What appeals to that sex? Girls, for instance, tend to be a bit more interested in stories that have a bit of a romantic twist to them, while guys tend to like stories with more action and adventure.

Once you’ve got a good idea in your head, it may be smart to run it past a teen or pre-teen. Snag one that you know and start telling them about the story. If they start asking questions and seem to be enjoying the idea, you’ve got something. If they don’t seem to be getting into it, ask another teenager, and if that one doesn’t get into the idea, it may be time to start at the drawing board again. Once you find a great idea, though, you can create a teen or pre-teen masterpiece!

Writing a Children’s Book

June 16th, 2010

When your children are young and you read them stories, it’s easy to think that it would be far too simple to be able to write your own children’s book. All you have to do is to come up with some sort of a good tale, and to be able to rhyme, right? Not necessarily. Any really good children’s book also comes with illustrations, and unless you’re really good at drawing and illustrating, you may find that you have a difficult task ahead of you.

If you’re set on writing a children’s novel, the first thing you may want to do is to find an illustrator. You may have a friend or family member who is a good illustrator, but if you don’t, you can always connect with one using other methods. Some people use sources such as Craigslist to place an ad, while others place an ad in their local paper or at their local community center. It’s a good idea to make sure that the illustrator that you connect with knows how to use Photoshop or some other form of digital editing software, especially if you’re going to be publishing your work online, because it is the fastest way to get your illustrations up with your work.

Once you’ve made an agreement with an illustrator, you can start working! Make sure that your story is one that is interesting to children as well as being age appropriate. It should be something that they have fun reading and that actually engages them, so that they’re anxious to learn more about how the whole reading “thing” works. Writing a children’s book is a lot harder than it seems, but if you get the right combination of things going on, you can create absolute magic!

Using a Press Release for Marketing Your Ebook

June 14th, 2010

Today we’re going to talk about press releases. You’ve probably seen a press release before. A press release is a way to announce a new type of product or service to the world. It’s a way to get information out in one quick swipe, while making sure that the information is correct as well. Many new authors, especially those who are self-publishing online, don’t realize that they can use a press release in order to get the word out about their new work. But it’s important to correctly write a press release and to submit it to the right sites. So how do you correctly write a press release?

First of all, you need to have something to announce, and announcing something like a new novel is the perfect type of thing to announce. Next you need to have a format. If you do a search online for a press release you’ll see what the general format looks like. You can copy a good press release to your Word blank document and can use that as a template so that you can make sure that you get the style correct. Plug in the basic information, such as the date and the location, and then make sure that you’ve got a great title and subtitle in mind. Something that catches the eye while, at the same time, giving information.

There are many different websites online that you can submit your press release to when you’re done. Simply search for websites that accept press releases and you’ll find a number of them! Then submit your press release and watch as it calls attention to your new work. Make sure that you put the website address on the bottom of the press release (and once in the release as well) so that people know how to get to your work!

Simple Writing Tips

June 11th, 2010

Take a look at some of the most popular writers of the last twenty years and you’ll find that many of them have never studied English in college. Some of them never even went to college. Despite common beliefs, college is not a prerequisite when it comes to writing amazing works of art. You should, however, be able to write clearly, so that your readers are able to understand what you’re writing, and so that they are able to get into the story.

If you’re someone who hasn’t been to college and who isn’t quite sure about how to write accurately, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to pick up some grammatical tips online, so that you can write without grammatical errors, especially if you’re going to be writing and publishing your own work, without the aid of an established writer. One good thing about writing your own work is that you can bend the rules a bit, but all experts recommend that you understand what the rules are, and why they’re there, before you start to bend them.

There are a few basics that you should keep to when you’re writing. First, make sure that you use the same tense throughout the story. This means using either “he, she, it”, or “I, we”. So many authors make this basic mistake, and it is one that can really take you out of the story, which you definitely don’t want to do. Another mistake is to spell things incorrectly, and this can be solved easily! Simply run a spell check on your document after every chapter and you’ll be able to get rid of almost all misspelled words. And remember to keep the language understandable. One tip from established authors is to write to a fifth or sixth grade level, so that way anyone can enjoy your work.

Writing Troubles: Fear of Failure

June 9th, 2010

What stops you from getting your work out there for people to read? For many people the problem isn’t that they think that their work isn’t good enough, or that they don’t have enough time to get the work done in the first place. The majority of potential authors don’t get their work out there because they’re scared of failure. A fear of failure has kept more than one amazing author holed up in their homes and staying away from their computers.

This is a frustrating thing for a lover of words to hear. That someone would avoid getting their work out there for the masses to see simply because they were scared of failing is simply tragic! What would the world be like if Stephen King had been too scared to submit his work and to become published? Or Danielle Steele? Or any of the popular authors of the last twenty years? Things would be very different, indeed. That’s why it’s extremely important that you get over your fear of failure and that you are able to go for your dreams. Here are a few tips to help you to get over that fear.

First, admit that you have a fear. Too many people put off writing their work because they say that they don’t have enough time, or that they don’t have a solid story in mind, or characters that they love. Recognize these for what they are: excuses. The real thing that’s stopping you from writing your novel, poem, cookbook, or whatever you want to write is the fear of failure. Once you recognize that you are dealing with a fear of failure, you can start to conquer that fear. Some people find that simply speaking with others helps them to conquer the fear, while others find that getting professional therapy helps.

Being Wary of Publishers

June 7th, 2010

When you’re dealing with publishing a book, one thing that you’ll run into is that it can be very difficult to know who to trust. Have you ever seen a movie where the main character is a singer or an actor and someone promises to help them, only to dump them on the side of the road and to make money off of them? This can and has happened to writers and is something that you will want to avoid with everything you’ve got. But how can you avoid being tricked by a pretend publisher?

First, make sure that you know who you’re dealing with. If you decide to work with a publisher, make sure you know everything that you can about that publisher before you start talking to them. If you’re dealing with an online publisher, it’s always smart to make sure that there are actual people behind the company. Send them an email or give them a call and talk with them.

Another thing that you should also make sure of is that you don’t give anything away for free. While most publishers will ask to see a few chapters of your manuscript, they won’t request to see it all without talking about some sort of deal. If you’re dealing with a publisher who tells you that you need to give them your entire book to read before they publish it, be very wary.

Do a lot of research online about the publisher that you’re thinking of working with so that you can discover if they have a good history or not. And if you’ve decided that you really don’t want to have to worry about a crooked publisher, remember that you can always self-publish your work, which can be much less stressful in some instances!
