How to Publish Your Work

August 11th, 2010

The decision as to how you should publish your work can be an agonizing one. You’ve basically got three options available to you: the first is to go the traditional route by having a publishing house print your work. The second is to publish your work yourself, and the third is to publish it through the internet as an ebook. So which is the best option? That depends on you.

Let’s talk first about publishing through a publishing house. The novels that you see in the library and on the store shelves? They were printed through a publishing house. You may automatically assume that going through a publishing house means that you’ll have the best chance at the most money, but you would actually be wrong. While being published through a publishing house is a dream come true, it’s a very difficult one to achieve. Many people wait years, constantly submitting their work to publishers, before they actually get published. So while it can be a viable option, it’s one that can take a very long time to see come to fruition.

Then there’s printing your work yourself. This is also an option that you can explore, but it’s one that you may not be happy with. Books that are self-published don’t tend to do well, save one or two exceptions to the rule. They’re not cheap to publish on your own and many people actually lose money through this type of publishing.

Publishing through the internet and creating an ebook, however, is actually affordable and is something that can make you money. Publishing houses are now realizing that people are printing through the internet, and that these pieces of work are getting noticed. There have been a number of e-books recently that have been picked up by publishing houses, but while they were e-books they earned plenty of money on their own. Deciding how you’ll publish your work is difficult, so make sure that you look at all the options available to you before you decide on one.

Are You Sure You’re Ready to Publish?

July 14th, 2010

Are you ready to publish your work? Are you sure? There are many authors who complain about their work, wondering why they don’t have as many followers of their writing as they hoped that they would have. Half of the reason why so many authors fail when they first start is because the work that they put out isn’t really ready. The work may be incomplete, or the story may be thin, or it may be simple editing problems that keep the work from being ready to publish. Before you publish your work, check out a few things first in order to give your work the best chance to shine.

The first thing that you should do is to make sure that you’ve thoroughly edited for the basic things, such as spelling and sentence completion. This is done easily enough, and when you do it, make sure that your sentences and paragraphs aren’t too long. A paragraph that is too long runs the risk of boring your readers, which is something that you definitely don’t want to do. The same holds true for sentences. You need to make sure that you justify every sentence that you have in your work. If you can read a paragraph and can remove a sentence or two without altering the meaning of the paragraph, then those sentences likely don’t need to be there in the first place.

It’s also a good idea to have a friend or two read your work before you go to publish it. This not only helps you to catch any mistakes that you may have missed, but also help you to ensure that your work is complete and that the story makes sense. Double check everything and you’ll quickly find that your work becomes better and better!

The Popularity of Epublishing

June 21st, 2010

Since the introduction of the iPad, other companies have been rushing to get out their products. They have been attempting to create new items that not only are able to make phone calls (which the iPad can not do), but that have much more internet access and abilities. Now it’s even possible to watch a movie on many of the different phones that are out there. Because of this it is becoming even more important to make sure that you know about epublishing.

Epublishing used to be something that only a very few people did. You could find plenty of fan websites that had fanfiction that you could enjoy online, and this was one o the first versions of epublishing. Now, however, it’s possible to find entire books, even some of the newest releases. Look at the bookstore and you’ll find some new books by your favorite authors. Look online and you’ll be able to find the same books, in e-format, and often for a much lower price, especially if you purchase a plan that allows you to download a specific amount of books within a specific time frame, much like people download music.

The main goal of any aspiring writer used to be to get published by a reputable publishing house. This could be very difficult, as publishing houses were very specific about who or what they wanted. The world of epublishing, however, has opened up the realm of possibilities for writers, and has made it easier now than ever before for someone to be able to publish their work. And now epublishing is not only easy, it’s reputable as well. If you’ve been wanting to publish your work, look to epublishing. It can help you to get your work published and to achieve your dreams.

Being Wary of Publishers

June 7th, 2010

When you’re dealing with publishing a book, one thing that you’ll run into is that it can be very difficult to know who to trust. Have you ever seen a movie where the main character is a singer or an actor and someone promises to help them, only to dump them on the side of the road and to make money off of them? This can and has happened to writers and is something that you will want to avoid with everything you’ve got. But how can you avoid being tricked by a pretend publisher?

First, make sure that you know who you’re dealing with. If you decide to work with a publisher, make sure you know everything that you can about that publisher before you start talking to them. If you’re dealing with an online publisher, it’s always smart to make sure that there are actual people behind the company. Send them an email or give them a call and talk with them.

Another thing that you should also make sure of is that you don’t give anything away for free. While most publishers will ask to see a few chapters of your manuscript, they won’t request to see it all without talking about some sort of deal. If you’re dealing with a publisher who tells you that you need to give them your entire book to read before they publish it, be very wary.

Do a lot of research online about the publisher that you’re thinking of working with so that you can discover if they have a good history or not. And if you’ve decided that you really don’t want to have to worry about a crooked publisher, remember that you can always self-publish your work, which can be much less stressful in some instances!

Setting Your Own Publishing Deadlines

June 4th, 2010

Publishing deadlines are an extremely important thing to think about, and something that many people avoid thinking about. When you publish with a publishing house, they give you deadlines that you need to follow. They want, for example, to have a specific amount of pages done within a specific amount of time. This is actually a good thing for most writers, because it keeps them on their toes and helps them to get their work done in a reasonable amount of time.

When you’re e-publishing, you may find that you have to set your own deadlines, which can be something that is very difficult for people to do, especially when the weather is gorgeous out. It’s easy to want to sit inside and watch television during the winter months, but it’s even easier to want to go out and to enjoy the warm summer weather instead of writing. That’s when it’s a really good idea to set deadlines.

When you start thinking about setting deadlines, you need to set reasonable deadlines. If you’re working full-time, write down your daily schedule so that you get a good idea of what time you have free. Be honest in what amount of time it takes you to do specific things, such as make dinner or do the laundry. This will not only help you to get organized but will show you where you have time to work on your writing in your day. Then, once you’ve found out where you have time, start writing! Set yourself a realistic goal, such as finishing a chapter every two weeks. Then make sure that you meet that goal – if you have to, have someone hold you accountable for reaching that goal. That way you’ll get your writing finished even if you don’t have a publisher!

Are You Ready to Write a Book?

May 17th, 2010

It’s one thing to have a dream of being a writer, and it’s another to actually follow through with your dream and to become a writer. Not everyone is meant to be a famous author, but it can be hard to know if you’re someone who is actually ready to achieve your dream or if you still have some work to do. There are a few questions that you should ask yourself before you think about publishing a book.

First, do you have the skills necessary to write a book? Writing a book requires more than just desire, it requires the ability to write a story that others can understand and enjoy, as well as the ability to take criticism and to learn from it. It means that you have to be able to finish what you start and to keep putting yourself out there, which is not always easy.

Are you willing to research anything that is necessary for you to research in order for you to finish your book? Even if you’re writing about the present-day, there are all sorts of things that you may need to learn about, from the settings that the story takes place in to the type of language that the characters use. And if you’re writing about the past, there is a great deal more to research. Are you willing to put in the time to do the research?

And finally, do you have an entrepreneurial spirit? It’s one thing to write a story without wanting profit, but most true authors need to earn money from their stories in order to survive. The best authors need to publish their tales and don’t write just for fun. Before you begin the writing adventure, ask yourself these questions so that you can see if you’re truly ready to write and publish a book.

Publishing On the iPad

May 7th, 2010

The iPad made a huge splash when it was released. It sold millions of units and will likely sell millions more. One of the biggest reasons that many people are purchasing the iPad is because they want to be able to read books on the go. That’s one of the things that makes publishing your book digitally a great idea. When you publish your book digitally, it can get online and into the hands of the readers faster than in any other way.

So how do you get your book in the iPad? Believe it or not, it’s very easy. There are a number of different ways that you can do it. The first thing that you have to do is to make sure that you’ve made your ebook available in PDF format, as this is the most widely used format for digital books.

Then you need to find a company to publish your book for you. You can do it yourself, going through companies like Amazon, but it is often easier to get your book distributed where it needs to be to get it onto the iPad when you work through a publisher. Find an ebook publisher and your ebook will be in the hands of people who have their iPads very quickly.

One thing that you need to take a look at before you publish any ebook through a company is what they’re charging you. Some companies will charge a low fee, and this is normal. Others, however, will try to charge as much as they can in an effort to get as much money out of you as possible. While you may have to pay a small fee, paying a very large fee to publish onto programs like the iPad is not necessarily necessary.

Publishing: Printed or Ebook?

April 12th, 2010

If you’ve managed to completely write your novel, congratulations! Writing a novel from one end to the other is not an easy task, especially when you’re already working a full time job to pay the bills. Once you’ve gotten the book written, it’s time to get it published. After all, it’s no good to write a book if you’re the only one who is going to read it. Once you’ve gotten it written, you have to decide how you want to publish it. Do you want to publish it with a publishing house who markets hardcover and paperback books, or do you want to go the ebook route?

The first thing you need to know about publishing with a publishing house that actually prints books is that the process can be extremely long. When you see an author explode into the scene, like Stephanie Meyer, it’s easy to believe that one day she was a nobody and that the next she was known around the world. That’s not, however, the truth. Authors often have to submit their work over and over to publishing houses in order to get someone to actually believe in their work enough to publish it. And the process to get someone to read the work can take months.

With ebook publishing, however, things move much faster. An ebook publisher is often able to publish a book in just a few weeks, which allows you to get your work out there for others to see much faster. And because of the fact that ebooks are so much easier to access instantly then printed books, people are much more likely to purchase and download them, allowing you, the author, to start receiving recognition for your book almost instantly.

Problems with Publishing an Ebook

March 26th, 2010

It’s true that there are a number of great things about publishing an ebook, and you’ll find information about all of the good things online. But there are also some negative things about publishing an ebook, or at least negative unless you know how to counteract them. In this post we’ll discuss the negative things and how to overcome them, making publishing your own ebook a viable option.

The first is the lack of publicity. When you publish a book with a large publishing house, you have someone to do the publicity for you. It is true that you will have to do your own publicity, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Many times, when people publish a novel through a publishing house and leave the publicity to them, they are unhappy with how the publicity is done. When you do your own publicity, you can make sure that your publishing is done correctly. And if you do things smartly, you won’t need to spend much time at all marketing your ebook.

Another negative about publishing an ebook is that many people do not believe that ebooks are “real”. This is a stigma that is attached to ebooks because they are much newer than the classic paperback. How can you change people’s ideas about ebooks? One great way is to get some great reviews of your ebook. Solicit a number of well-known blog reviewers and offer them a free copy of the book if they go ahead and review it honestly. This will give your ebook exposure while, at the same time, helping to get rid of the stigma that goes along with ebooks.

Publishing on Amazon Kindle

March 24th, 2010

You’ve finally written your ebook and you’ve gotten it online for other people to read. But now you’re interested in getting your ebook read by even more people, and one way to do that is to get it on Amazon Kindle. Kindle has taken the world by storm, and it’s natural now to see many people who are waiting in line or who are waiting for their children to get done practice carrying a Kindle in their hands. So how do you get your ebook onto Kindle?

First you need to have to publish it through Amazon’s digital text platform site. In order to do this, you need to download the .pdf Quickstart Guide, which will help you to figure out every step that you need to take in order to get your ebook available for millions to download through Kindle. But in order to do that you need to have an account at Amazon. Most people do, but if you don’t, it is very easy to do, and is absolutely free.

Once you do this, and entre all of your account information into the digital text platform site, you will be asked to complete four steps so that you can publish. Each step needs to be changed to a green check mark or else the publishing won’t work. One of the biggest things that you need to do is to make sure that you enter the product detail correctly. The product detail is the most important thing because it is what your potential customers will see when they think about downloading your ebook. And it is also important to make sure that you have a good retail price. Too high and people may not buy it. Too low and you may not profit. Do a bit of research on this step so that you can make sure that you get the right price for your ebook.
